Description:
At the heart of Black Lab Architect’s Maison Noir residence is a striking, monolithic staircase, inspired by Frank Gehry’s iconic spiral staircase at the Art Gallery of Ontario. Crafted from rift-sawn white oak, the staircase serves not only as a functional element, connecting the entryway on the ground floor to the living space above, but also as a prominent sculptural feature within the home.
The suspended concrete tread structure is enveloped in custom plywood framing and meticulously crafted curved veneered panels. Solid white oak treads complement the staircase’s clean lines, while the reveal details—backed in matte black Fenix—establish a cohesive link with the cabinetry throughout the residence. The seamless attachment of the white oak panels, achieved through concealed fasteners, enhances the minimalist aesthetic and emphasizes the staircase’s architectural precision.
